What to know before you buy

The beagle was bred to follow a trail on its own and to give voice while doing it. Both qualities are still there: the dog is loud, and it makes its own decisions without a person.

In a city flat that shows up as a tendency to bark and an unreliable recall on walks — not because the dog is disobedient, but because the trail matters more to it than the command.

Grooming is minimal: a short coat and simple care. Exercise, on the other hand, has to be serious.
